Good urbanism is too focused on cycling

I sometimes wonder if the emphasis on cycling as a main mode of transport risks narrowing the urbanist view and also restricting the community from growing as much as it can.

Certainly cycling has many significant advantages over driving, and cities should be prioritizing cycling infrastructure significantly (perhaps more people should own bikes than own cars).

But cycling is not for everyone. My intuition is that a focus on public transportation and pedestrian design will take us farther.

Counter to that though, it does seem like some of the best designed [^1] cities have relied on biking to help them get there. Since private vehicles are hard to make go away, making the bicycle the private vehicle of choice for most may still be worthy of its place as a top urbanist priority.
